Seven themes from UTD plus the demo evidence from Allure, Boutique, Gain, Impression and Ultra show that having a countdown timer setting and having it turned on for a shopper are two different facts, and the gap between them changes what a merchant needs to do before Black Friday.
A merchant searching for a Shopify theme with a countdown timer usually assumes the search is binary, the theme either has one or it does not. That assumption is wrong in a more useful way than it sounds. Every theme checked here has a countdown-related setting written into its code, so the real question a merchant needs answered before Black Friday is not whether the feature exists but how it is wired, what it defaults to, and whether it actually renders on a live page or just sits unused in the editor.
UTD publishes seven themes in the official Shopify Theme Store: Allure, Boutique, Fuse, Gain, Impression, Ultra and Victory. Reading each theme’s own section files shows a countdown mechanism in all seven. Allure, Fuse and Impression use a checkbox called enable_timer inside sections/banner.liquid, and that checkbox defaults to off in all three. Victory uses a differently named checkbox, enable_countdown_timer, also in sections/banner.liquid, also off by default. Boutique, Gain and Ultra instead use a select field called timer_type, described in the editor as “Choose date:”, defaulting to end_date, found in sections/banner.liquid for Boutique and Gain and in sections/banner-animation-heading.liquid for Ultra.
None of the seven ships with a timer running the moment the theme is installed. A merchant has to open the relevant section and switch the setting before anything counts down on the storefront.
The countdown setting itself is one line, but it rarely stands alone. Each theme bundles it with a cluster of related settings covering the date logic, display format and styling. Counting every setting the theme’s own schema groups under the Countdown Timer feature shows a wide spread: Allure has 11, Impression has 20, Victory has 41, Fuse has 35, Gain has 48, Boutique has 67, and Ultra has 74.
That is not a quality ranking. A theme with 74 settings around its timer is not necessarily better for a sale than one with 11, it just means more decisions to make, and more places for a Black Friday banner to end up configured wrong if nobody checks it the week before launch. Boutique’s countdown feature also comes with a dedicated “Countdown banner” section file, sections/countdown-banner.liquid, giving merchants a separate block to drop in rather than only editing the general banner.
This is where the gap actually matters. Snapshots taken October 6, 2026 checked each demo store’s home, collection and product pages for a literal countdown marker in the rendered markup. On the Ultra demo store, the Boutique demo store, the Victory demo store and the Impression demo store, a countdown marker was found live across those pages. On the Allure, Fuse and Gain demo stores, the same check found no countdown marker on any of the pages inspected in that snapshot, even though Allure’s and Fuse’s own enable_timer checkbox and Gain’s timer_type select both exist in their respective sections/banner.liquid files.
That absence is a fact about one configuration of one demo store on one day, not a statement that Allure, Fuse or Gain cannot run a countdown. The setting is there in the code; it was simply not switched on, or not placed on a visible page, in the store snapshot taken that day. A merchant evaluating any of these three for Black Friday needs to open the section themselves and confirm the toggle, rather than judge by what a demo happens to show.
| Theme | Setting name | Type | Default | File | Settings nearby | Timer seen live Oct 6, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Allure (UTD) | enable_timer | checkbox | off | sections/banner.liquid | 11 | No |
| Boutique | timer_type | select (end_date) | end_date | sections/banner.liquid | 67 | Yes |
| Fuse | enable_timer | checkbox | off | sections/banner.liquid | 35 | No |
| Gain | timer_type | select (end_date) | end_date | sections/banner.liquid | 48 | No |
| Impression | enable_timer | checkbox | off | sections/banner.liquid | 20 | Yes |
| Ultra | timer_type | select (end_date) | end_date | sections/banner-animation-heading.liquid | 74 | Yes |
| Victory | enable_countdown_timer | checkbox | off | sections/banner.liquid | 41 | Yes |
Impression carries a second, separate countdown mechanism worth noting because it can be confused with the first. Its Slideshow feature has a setting called slider_timer_enable, labeled “Enable countdown timer,” living in sections/announcement-bar.liquid with 20 settings around it, and this one defaults to on rather than off. It is a different code location from Impression’s own banner-based enable_timer, so a merchant checking “is the timer on” in Impression needs to check both places, not one.
The counts in this article rest on reading each theme’s own section and settings_schema files directly, Allure 1.2.5, Boutique 2.3.4, Fuse’s archive dated September 7, 2026, Gain 4.3.1, Impression 1.1.1, Ultra 2.3.4 and Victory 1.2.2, alongside front-end marker checks on each theme’s public demo store taken October 6, 2026.
A merchant shopping specifically for countdown timer behavior should open the banner section in the theme’s own live demo and watch whether the setting is already switched on, because the code fact alone will not say that. Anyone comparing across the UTD catalog can start from the Theme Store listing linked above and treat the setting count as a rough measure of how long configuration will take, not of how good the sale banner will look.
Every one of the seven themes UTD lists in the Shopify Theme Store has a countdown-related setting somewhere in sections/banner.liquid or an equivalent file: Allure, Fuse and Impression use a checkbox called enable_timer, Victory uses enable_countdown_timer, and Boutique, Gain and Ultra use a select called timer_type defaulting to end_date. The setting defaults to off or to end_date in every case measured, meaning no theme ships a running timer out of the box. A merchant has to open the section and turn it on before it will count down anything.
The number next to the Countdown Timer feature ranges widely: Allure has 11 settings total around it, Impression has 20, Victory has 41, Gain has 48, Fuse has 35, Boutique has 67, and Ultra has 74. That count is not a judgment of quality, it is a rough proxy for how many choices a merchant has to make, including date pickers, display styles and text fields, before the banner looks right.
Not necessarily. The demo snapshots taken October 6, 2026 found a countdown marker live on pages for Ultra, Boutique, Victory and Impression. The same snapshot method found no countdown marker on the Allure, Fuse or Gain demo stores checked, even though all three carry the enable_timer setting in their banner section file. A setting existing in sections/banner.liquid is a code fact; a timer rendering on a page is a separate, demo-level fact, and the two should not be treated as interchangeable.
Impression carries its own enable_timer checkbox inside sections/banner.liquid, defaulting to off, with 20 total settings around it. Separately, Impression's Slideshow feature has a setting called slider_timer_enable, described as 'Enable countdown timer', which defaults to on and lives in sections/announcement-bar.liquid with 20 settings nearby. These are two distinct code locations for two distinct countdown mechanisms inside the same theme, and a merchant turning off one does not turn off the other.
No single setting should decide a theme choice this close to Black Friday, because the same banner section usually also carries Announcement Bar, Slideshow and Free Shipping Bar logic that a merchant will configure at the same time. Countdown Timer settings ranges from 11 to 74 across the seven themes measured, so the practical question is how much configuration time is available, not whether the feature exists at all, since every theme in this set has some version of it.
