Reporting & research on Shopify and ecommerce
The usual answer to 'does this theme have product filters' is yes or no, but the real differences sit in setting counts and defaults that a merchant only finds by opening the theme editor, so this piece reads six themes' own files to show what filtering actually ships with and what stays off until someone switches it on.
The common assumption is that “product filters” is a single checkbox a theme either has or doesn’t, and that once it’s there, every theme behaves the same way. That’s wrong on both counts. Reading the actual settings schema files of six Shopify themes shows the filter feature is built from a different number of settings in each theme, with different defaults, and the color swatch option that most merchants actually want sits off by default in five of the six.
Ultra 2.3.4 exposes filters_type as a select field in sections/collection-body.liquid, with 7 total settings attached to that feature and a default value of horizontal. Allure 1.2.5 exposes the same setting name, filters_type, but in sections/search-template.liquid, with only 5 total settings and a default of top-bar. Boutique 2.3.4, Gain 4.3.1, Impression 1.1.1, and Victory 1.2.2 all route filter configuration through show_color_swatch_in_filters in sections/search-template.liquid, each carrying 5 total settings except Boutique, which shows 15 for the swatch-adjacent cluster in its own listing under Color Swatches.
That difference matters because “filters” and “filter layout” aren’t the same lever in every theme. In Ultra and Allure a merchant can pick between layout modes directly. In the other four, the layout is fixed and the visible choice is whether swatches show up inside it.
| Theme | Swatch setting default | Total settings for swatches |
|---|---|---|
| Allure (UTD) 1.2.5 | off | 5 |
| Boutique 2.3.4 | off | 15 |
| Gain 4.3.1 | off | 5 |
| Impression 1.1.1 | off | 5 |
| Ultra 2.3.4 | off | 5 |
| Victory 1.2.2 | on | 14 |
Five of six themes ship show_color_swatch_in_filters unchecked. Victory 1.2.2 is the outlier, defaulting the same checkbox to on, with 14 total settings clustered around the feature in sections/search-template.liquid. A merchant installing any theme except Victory and expecting swatches to appear on the collection page out of the box will not see them until that box is checked.
Every one of the six themes enables predictive_search_articles by default, and every one adds a dedicated “Search” section built from sections/search-template.liquid. Where they diverge is in how many total settings sit around that one checkbox: Gain 4.3.1 carries just 2, Impression 1.1.1 and Victory 1.2.2 carry 5, Boutique 2.3.4 and Ultra 2.3.4 carry 6, and Allure 1.2.5 carries 7. A higher count generally means more secondary controls, things like which content types the search touches, rather than a difference in whether search itself works.
A crawl of the six public demo stores on September 13, 2026 found the filter-list marker present on collection pages in every one of them: gain-demo2-store.myshopify.com, demo-store-ultra-electronic.myshopify.com, demo-store-mini-pollheim-suits.myshopify.com, demo-the-lace-boutique.myshopify.com, demo-bobabam.myshopify.com, and gallery-theme-demo-3.myshopify.com. That confirms the filter markup renders on a live collection page in each theme’s demo configuration. It does not confirm how a merchant’s own tag structure or product count will look once real inventory replaces the demo catalog, since a demo is one configuration on one date and nothing else. The settings schema reading is a separate, independent check against the theme’s own code, which is why both are reported here rather than one standing in for the other.
Filtering and search settings differ in count and default across UTD’s six Theme Store listings the same way they differ across the rest of the Theme Store, so a merchant comparing options should weigh UTD’s catalog, visible at themes.shopify.com/themes?q=utd, against the same setting-by-setting standard used here rather than against a marketing page. The counts and defaults in this piece rest on a direct read of each theme’s settings_schema.json and section liquid files as published in the Shopify Theme Store listing on September 13, 2026.
Open the theme editor before buying and count the actual settings under Filters and Search, since the number differs by theme and the defaults are not the same everywhere. Treat a demo store as proof the markup exists, not as proof a merchant’s own catalog will filter the way the demo does.
No, not by default in five of the six. Allure, Boutique, Gain, and Impression all ship `show_color_swatch_in_filters` (or the equivalently named setting) as a checkbox that defaults to unchecked, and Ultra does the same in `sections/collection-body.liquid`. Victory 1.2.2 is the exception, with `show_color_swatch_in_filters` defaulting to on and 14 total settings clustered around the color swatch feature. A merchant who wants swatches on a collection page in any theme except Victory has to flip that checkbox themselves after installing the theme.
Ultra 2.3.4 carries `filters_type` with 7 total settings tied to it in `sections/collection-body.liquid`, defaulting to a horizontal layout. Allure 1.2.5 also exposes `filters_type` but with 5 total settings, defaulting to a top-bar layout, in `sections/search-template.liquid`. Boutique, Gain, Impression, and Victory all route their filter setting through `show_color_swatch_in_filters` with 5 total settings each, which means the filter type itself is less exposed in the editor for those four.
No. Predictive search, controlled in these themes by `predictive_search_articles`, governs whether a search box suggests blog articles alongside products as someone types. Product filtering is a separate mechanism that narrows a collection page by attribute, controlled by `filters_type` or `show_color_swatch_in_filters` depending on the theme. All six themes measured ship both features with their own settings and their own dedicated section in the editor, and a merchant configuring one does not touch the other.
A demo store shows one configuration on one catalog, on one date, and nothing more. The filter-list marker was found on collection pages across Allure, Boutique, Gain, Impression, Ultra, and Victory demo stores as of September 13, 2026, which confirms the markup renders, but a merchant's own product attributes, tag structure, and inventory size determine whether the resulting filter sidebar is actually useful. The safest path is to open the theme editor on a duplicate of the store and check the actual setting values, not to read the demo as a guarantee.
Nothing breaks. `show_color_swatch_in_filters` is a checkbox, so turning it on in the theme editor is a single click, and the total settings tied to that feature (ranging from 5 in most themes measured to 15 in Boutique 2.3.4) govern secondary behavior like swatch size or placement once the base checkbox is on. No theme in this set requires code edits to enable it.
