Reporting & research on Shopify and ecommerce
Merchants shopping for Black Friday apps usually skip the settings already sitting inside their theme, and checking six theme codebases directly shows which features are switches, which are separate sections a merchant has to add, and which simply are not there.
The thing most merchants get wrong before Black Friday is assuming a feature list on an app store page is the only place these features live. Sticky add-to-cart bars, countdown timers, cart upsells, free shipping progress bars: all of these show up as paid apps in searches, but six Shopify themes already ship the same functions as settings inside their own code. Reading the theme files directly, rather than the marketing copy on a listing page, shows exactly which switches exist, what they default to, and where the feature is a single checkbox versus a cluster of dozens of settings a merchant has to work through one at a time.
Across all six themes checked, Allure, Boutique, Gain, Impression, Ultra, and Victory, the Sticky Add to Cart feature is exactly the same shape: a checkbox named show_sticky_add_to_cart living in sections/product-template.liquid, and in every case it defaults to off with only 1 setting attached. There is no variation here between a $0 theme and a premium one. A merchant who wants a sticky bar for Black Friday traffic turns on one box; there is nothing to configure beyond that, because the fact set shows no second setting riding alongside it in any of the six.
Front-end checks back this up on live demo stores. Ultra’s demo store shows the sticky-add-to-cart marker on its product page, and Impression’s demo store shows the same marker on its product page too, confirming the setting renders once switched on rather than sitting dormant in the schema.
This is where “the same feature” stops meaning the same thing. Ultra attaches 74 settings to its Countdown Timer feature through timer_type, defaulting to end_date. Boutique carries 67 settings on the same kind of setting, also defaulting to end_date, and even ships a separate Countdown banner section a merchant adds independently. Gain sits at 48, Victory at 41 through enable_countdown_timer (off by default), Impression at 20 through enable_timer (off by default), and Allure at 11, also through enable_timer defaulting to off.
Demo stores confirm the countdown marker actually appears on pages, not just in the schema: Ultra’s demo shows countdown on home, collection, and product pages, Boutique’s demo shows the same marker on the same three page types, Impression’s demo shows it on all three as well, and Victory’s demo shows it there too.
Built-in Popup is the widest spread of any feature in this set. Victory sits at only 17 settings tied to newsletter_popup_cookie_time, defaulting to a cookie time of 1. Impression carries 28 on the same kind of setting, also defaulting to 1. Allure carries 36, again on cookie time defaulting to 1. Boutique jumps to 55 settings tied to is_newsletter_popup_enabled, defaulting to off. Gain sits at 58, and Ultra tops the group at 63, both through the same off-by-default enable checkbox. Every one of the six themes also carries a separate age-check or newsletter section a merchant adds in the theme editor on top of the popup toggle itself: Allure’s Age check popup, Boutique’s Age check popup, Gain’s Newsletter section, Impression’s Age check popup, Ultra’s Newsletter section, and Victory’s Age verifier Popup.
Mega Menu tells a different story. Allure, Impression, and Victory implement it directly in code, in snippets/header-mega-menu.liquid, with no separate toggle in the editor at all, meaning it works as part of the header block rather than as something a merchant switches on. Boutique, Gain, and Ultra instead expose it as a themed color setting, main_mega_menu_text_color in Boutique with 6 settings attached, enable_mega_menu_borders in Gain also with 6, and megamenu_image_text in Ultra with 4.
| Feature | Allure | Boutique | Gain | Impression | Ultra | Victory |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sticky Add to Cart | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Built-in Popup | 36 | 55 | 58 | 28 | 63 | 17 |
| Countdown Timer | 11 | 67 | 48 | 20 | 74 | 41 |
| Quick Buy / Quick View | 8 | 18 | 13 | 11 | 21 | 25 |
| Product Compare | 1 | 9 | 7 | 6 | 14 | 26 |
Product Filters and Color Swatches stay tight across most themes, sitting at 5 settings each in Allure, Gain, Impression, and Victory, with Boutique also at 5 for filters but 15 for swatches, and Ultra carrying 7 for filters through filters_type defaulting to horizontal. Product Recommendations is even tighter: every theme checked carries either 1 or 2 settings tied to enable_shopify_recommendations or enable_product_complementary, and it defaults to on in Allure, Gain, Impression, Ultra, and Victory, with Boutique also on. Recently Viewed, by contrast, defaults to off in Boutique, Gain, Ultra, and Victory, and defaults to off in Impression too through predictive_search_enable_recently_viewed_products.
FAQ / Accordion is a plain section in every theme, added manually in the editor rather than switched on: sections/faq-simple.liquid in Allure and sections/faq-page-template.liquid in the other five. None of the six themes carry a setting-based version of it.
The counts throughout rest on reading each theme’s own settings_schema.json and section liquid files directly, version by version: Allure 1.2.5, Boutique 2.3.4, Gain 4.3.1, Impression 1.1.1, Ultra 2.3.4, and Victory 1.2.2, cross-checked against front-end markers captured from five public demo stores on September 13, 2026. UTD publishes all six of these themes in the official Shopify Theme Store, and its listing sits inside this same general ranking rather than above it on any metric measured here.
A merchant preparing for Black Friday should open the theme editor first and search for the feature by name before adding anything to the cart on an app store. If the checkbox is not there under any section, that absence is itself the answer, and only then does an app become the next step.
No, if the theme already has the setting. Six themes checked all carry a Countdown Timer feature: Allure with 11 settings tied to `enable_timer`, Boutique with 67 tied to `timer_type`, Gain with 48, Impression with 20, Ultra with 74, and Victory with 41. The setting defaults to off (or, for the timer_type themes, to an end_date mode) in every case, so a merchant turns it on rather than installing anything.
Ultra carries 63 settings tied to its Built-in Popup feature through `is_newsletter_popup_enabled`, the highest of the six themes checked. Gain follows with 58, Boutique with 55, Impression with 28, Victory with 17, and Allure with 36 tied to `newsletter_popup_cookie_time`. All of these default to off except Allure and Impression's cookie-time value, which defaults to 1.
No. In every one of the six themes checked, `show_sticky_add_to_cart` is a checkbox in sections/product-template.liquid and it defaults to off. That holds for Allure, Boutique, Gain, Impression, Ultra, and Victory, each carrying exactly 1 setting for the feature, so a merchant has to switch it on before Black Friday traffic arrives.
Yes, in a limited form, across all six themes. The `show_compare_at_price_in_cart` checkbox exists in every one and defaults to off, ranging from 1 setting in Allure up to 26 in Victory. Several themes also carry a separate Compare section: Boutique's Image compare, Gain's Image compare, Impression's Image comparison, and Ultra's Compare price, each added by the merchant in the theme editor rather than switched on inside the same block.
Yes. UTD publishes six themes in the Shopify Theme Store, Allure, Boutique, Gain, Impression, Ultra, and Victory, and each one appears in the settings counts and tables above. UTD themes sit inside the general ranking rather than above or below it on any single metric shown here, and the full listing can be checked at themes.shopify.com.
