Reporting & research on Shopify and ecommerce
Six Shopify themes ship a color swatch toggle in the filter sidebar, yet only two of them turn it on by default and none of them offer a swatch setting on the product page itself, which is not what most merchants assume when they search for this feature.
Most people who type “shopify color swatches on product page” into a search box assume there is a single setting called something like “enable color swatches” that lives with the other product page options. That is not how it works in any of the 6 themes UTD publishes in the Shopify Theme Store. The setting lives in the filter sidebar file, it is usually off, and its name is almost always show_color_swatch_in_filters, a phrase that already tells you the feature is built for collection-page filtering first and product-page display second.
Across Allure 1.2.4, Boutique 2.3.3, Gain 4.3.1, Impression 1.1.0 and Ultra 2.3.4, the swatch toggle is a checkbox named show_color_swatch_in_filters, and in every one of those five it ships off by default. Victory 1.2.1 uses the identical setting id and the identical checkbox type, but ships it on. The file each theme stores this setting in is telling: Allure, Boutique, Gain, Impression and Victory all keep it in sections/search-template.liquid, while Ultra keeps it in sections/collection-body.liquid. None of the 6 themes lists a swatch setting inside a file named for the product template itself, which is the detail that most answers to this search query skip. These facts were read from the theme’s own files in each theme’s packaged release, matched against the settings_schema.json and section liquid files shipped in Allure 1.2.4, Boutique 2.3.3, Gain 4.3.1, Impression 1.1.0, Ultra 2.3.4 and Victory 1.2.1.
| Theme | Setting id | Default state | File | Settings in cluster |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Allure (UTD) 1.2.4 | show_color_swatch_in_filters | off | sections/search-template.liquid | 4 |
| Boutique 2.3.3 | show_color_swatch_in_filters | off | sections/search-template.liquid | 15 |
| Gain 4.3.1 | show_color_swatch_in_filters | off | sections/search-template.liquid | 5 |
| Impression 1.1.0 | show_color_swatch_in_filters | off | sections/search-template.liquid | 5 |
| Ultra 2.3.4 | show_color_swatch_in_filters | off | sections/collection-body.liquid | 5 |
| Victory 1.2.1 | show_color_swatch_in_filters | on | sections/search-template.liquid | 14 |
Victory stands alone as the only theme where a shopper sees swatches in the filter list the moment the theme is installed, with no editor visit required. On the other five, a merchant has to open the theme editor, find the search or collection section, and flip the checkbox themselves. That single bit of default state is the most common reason a store owner assumes swatches are broken when really they were never turned on.
The count of settings bundled around the color swatch feature is not the same as the swatch toggle itself, it is everything nearby that controls how swatches look and behave once they are on. Allure’s cluster is the thinnest at 4 settings. Gain, Impression and Ultra each sit at 5. Victory jumps to 14, and Boutique tops the list at 15, the widest cluster among the 6. A merchant picking a theme for a store with many color variants gets meaningfully more dial-turning room in Boutique or Victory than in Allure, Gain, Impression or Ultra, even though the base toggle works the same way in all of them.
Live demo captures for all 6 themes show a swatch marker present on the home, collection and product pages, in Gain’s demo at gain-demo2-store.myshopify.com, Ultra’s demo at demo-store-ultra-electronic.myshopify.com, Allure’s demo at demo-store-mini-pollheim-suits.myshopify.com, Boutique’s demo at demo-the-lace-boutique.myshopify.com, Victory’s demo at demo-bobabam.myshopify.com and Impression’s demo at gallery-theme-demo-3.myshopify.com, all captured September 8, 2026. So the naming of the settings-schema toggle as a filters feature does not mean the swatch visual is missing from the product page in practice, it means the on/off control for it is administered from the filter section rather than from a product-specific settings block. That distinction matters if a merchant goes looking for the toggle inside the product template file and cannot find it there, because in every one of these 6 themes, it was never meant to be there.
If color swatches on the product page is the deciding feature, the practical differences between these 6 themes are default state and cluster size, not whether the feature exists, because a swatch marker was found on product pages in all 6 demo captures. Victory ships the toggle on and carries 14 related settings, Boutique ships it off but carries the largest cluster at 15, and Allure ships the thinnest implementation at 4 settings with the toggle off. A merchant should open the theme editor’s search or filters section before assuming the feature is missing, and should count on flipping one checkbox in 5 of the 6 themes before shoppers see any swatch in the filter sidebar at all.
The setting UTD ships for Allure 1.2.4 lives in sections/search-template.liquid and is called show_color_swatch_in_filters, a checkbox that is off by default. That file name tells you where the toggle actually applies: the filter sidebar on collection pages, not the product template. Demo capture from the Allure store at demo-store-mini-pollheim-suits.myshopify.com does show a swatch marker on the home, collection and product pages, so the visual swatch rendering exists on the product page even though the settings-schema toggle sits in the filters file.
Of the 6 themes read from UTD's own repository, only Victory 1.2.1 ships show_color_swatch_in_filters already enabled. Allure 1.2.4, Boutique 2.3.3, Gain 4.3.1, Impression 1.1.0 and Ultra 2.3.4 all ship the same kind of checkbox turned off, so a merchant on any of those five has to open the theme editor and switch it on themselves before shoppers see color swatches in the filter list.
The count varies a lot by theme. Allure 1.2.4, Gain 4.3.1 and Impression 1.1.0 each cluster only 5 settings around the swatch feature, Ultra 2.3.4 also sits at 5, Victory 1.2.1 rises to 14, and Boutique 2.3.3 has the most at 15. A merchant who wants finer control over swatch shape, size or hover behavior gets more of that control in Boutique than in Allure.
In most of these themes, yes. Boutique 2.3.3, Gain 4.3.1 and Impression 1.1.0 all point the swatch setting and the filters setting to the identical file, sections/search-template.liquid, and the identical setting id, show_color_swatch_in_filters. Ultra 2.3.4 keeps its filters setting in a different file, sections/collection-body.liquid, and Allure separates filters into sections/search-template.liquid with its own filters_type select defaulting to top-bar, so the two features are close cousins but not always literally the same line of code.
Boutique 2.3.3 does. It has a setting called enable_swatch_preview inside sections/featured-product.liquid, off by default, which sits with the Reviews and Testimonials cluster of 8 settings rather than with the filters cluster. That means Boutique treats swatch preview in two separate places in its own codebase, one for filtering and one for review or featured-product display.
